About Nervous System Regulation

  • A dysregulated nervous system refers to an imbalance between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system, which can lead to a variety of physical, psychological, and cognitive symptoms.

  • The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is a network of nerves responsible for the “fight or flight” response. It is part of the autonomic nervous system and gets activated when you are under stress, during exercise, and when you go from a lying down to standing up position.

  • The parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS), also known as “rest and digest” system, is a network of nerves responsible for conserving energy and helping the body relax. The vagus nerve is the main nerve in the parasympathetic nervous system.

  • A dysregulated nervous system can be caused by a number of factors, including:

    • chronic stress, burnout & exhaustion

    • Trauma

    • Lifestyle (e.g. lack of exercise, inadequate nutrition)

    • Medical Conditions (e.g. diabetes)

    • Substance Use

    • Personality Traits (e.g. perfectionism)

    • Environmental Exposures

  • A regulated nervous system refers to an internal state where the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are balanced & in harmony. Individuals with a regulated nervous system tend to respond better to stress, are more resilient, and have optimal physical, psychological, and cognitive functioning.
