All About Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a structured and evidence-based therapeutic approach, rooted in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, that helps people understand the impact that traumatic events have had on their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

  • While Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is rooted in principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), the main difference is that CPT specifically focuses on trauma processing, where CBT can be used to treat a wider range of mental health concerns, including anxiety and depression.

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is used primarily to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), reducing symptoms, such as: flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance behaviours, and emotional dysregulation.
