Therapeutic Approach
KETAMINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY (KAP)
A Synergistic Approach to Treating PTSD & Other Mental Health Disorders
About Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
-
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic, psychedelic-assisted therapy treatment that combines the use of ketamine with psychotherapy to treat a variety of mental health conditions such as PTSD, major depressive disorder, and chronic pain.
KAP is a breakthrough treatment that helps individuals work through mental & emotional issues that are often too painful to work through in a traditional psychotherapy session.
KAP has the ability to produce quicker & more efficient clinical outcomes for those with treatment-resistance depression or other mental and emotional challenges.
-
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) combines the use of medically supported ketamine with psychotherapy to address the root cause of mental health conditions, leading to deep healing and improve overall quality of life.
In KAP, ketamine is administered in a controlled, therapeutic setting to help individuals access altered states of consciousness. This allows for deep emotional processing and insight into core issues, that otherwise may not be possible, or may take a very long time to get to, in a traditional psychotherapy session due to our natural defences and our systems protectors.
KAP speeds up the overall healing process and allows you to achieve results at a much quicker rate.
KAP is a highly effective treatment, especially for those who have tried other treatments and not gotten the results they wanted or needed.
-
KAP is most often used in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), PTSD, and chronic pain.
Research shows that KAP is also effective in treating: anxiety, OCD, substance use disorders + addiction, eating disorders, chronic pain, and OCD.
-
Ketamine on it own, has natural and powerful anti-anxiety and anti-depressant properties.
When combined with psychotherapy, this treatment offers rapid relief from emotional and physical pain, accelerated processing of unresolved trauma, and profound insights that enhance personal awareness and growth, creating long-standing change.

Psychedelic Vs. Psycholytic
Read below to find out whether psychedelic or psycholytic dosing sessions may be more appropriate for you!
-
Psychedelic or high dose sessions, are more ‘inward’ and allow for deep introspection. You may experience ego dissolution, mystical experiences, and profound insights.
A therapists main role in high dose sessions is to provide a safe container for your healing & assist you in navigating difficult moments in your journey, if needed.
These sessions are better suited for individuals with major depressive disorder, as well those who have been labelled as “treatment resistant”.
Ketamine on its own has the ability to boost neuroplasticity and act as a quick & effective anti-depressant known to stimulate the regrowth of synapses, effectively rewiring the brain.
Essentially, ketamine is helpful with this population in particular because it awakens clients into novel cognitive processes that traditional psychotherapy (without ketamine) may not be able to get to.
With higher dose ketamine sessions, you are typically getting more ketamine (including the anti-depressant properties associated with it) than you are in a lower dose ketamine session.
Psychedelic dosing may be better for you if you are experiencing:
Suicidality
OCD
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
Treatment Resistant Depression
Chronic Pain
End of Life Distress
Note: Psychedelic dosing may not be suitable to those who do not have an adequate grasp of their internal landscape.
-
During a psycholytic, or low-dose, session, you may feel like. you are in a meditative state & may notice yourself feeling more calm and relaxed than normal.
Low-dose ketamine is often referred to as a “heart opener” as it helps our natural defenders/ protector parts soften and take a step back, so that you have more access to ‘self’ during your session.
In low-dose sessions, you may feel safe enough to explore painful material & traumatic memories, that otherwise would be inaccessible to you. This allows for deep healing work to be completed more effectively, efficiently & improves overall treatment outcomes.
Psycholytic sessions are sometimes the preferred dose for individuals with PTSD and C-PTSD, as working through trauma is an integral part of healing.
FAQs
-
Yes.
This synergistic pairing may assist with:
1) Reseting the brains learning pathways
This is invaluable to psychotherapy, which often aims to restructure old and maladaptive patterns of thinking and behaving.2) Deepening Therapeutic Insights
Ketamine may help you develop deeper insights, clarity, or emotional resonance with themes emerging, allowing you to engage with the therapeutic process in a more meaningful way3) Accelerating Recovery
Ketamine can be like WD-40 for change and help “stuck” emotions move & be released a more rapid rate.
Within 48-hours of a ketamine therapy session, there is a “window” of neuroplasticity, which psychotherapists can use to encourage continued exploration or growth, through integration.
4) Window of Tolerance
Ketamine may help with emotional regulation and train your system to be able to tolerate deeper forms of trauma processing through psychotherapy. -
Your ketamine-assisted psychotherapy sessions are 2-hours in duration.
The medicine itself is typically short-lasting & your experience may last anywhere between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Afterwards, you may still notice lingering effects of the ketamine and therefore, for safety reasons, you are not permitted to drive to or from KAP sessions & will need to find alternative transportation.
-
As a part of your customized treatment plan without our carefully designed protocols, you are able to choose between psycholytic dosing sessions, psychedelic dosing sessions, and a combination of both with approval from your treatment team (suitability is an important consideration).
How Are We Different?
The “Intravenous Model” of Ketamine Therapy compared to our Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Program
Ketamine Therapy is a type of treatment that involves the use of administered Ketamine, typically through the use of ketamine infusions (IV ketamine), to treat a variety of conditions including mental health disorders & chronic pain. Ketamine therapy is usually offered by a medical professional (e.g. nurse or pain management clinic) and does not include psychotherapy as a part of treatment. It is not unusual for you to be left alone during your ketamine experience(s) and psychedelic preparation + integration by a trained professional is rarely provided. This model can leave you feeling alone, unsupported, and confused when trying to make sense of the deep emotional experiences that may be take place with this medicine.
Our Ketamine-assisted Psychotherapy program combines the powerful forces of ketamine therapy, with the added benefit of psychotherapy, and takes a holistic approach that focuses on healing all aspects of you, including your mind, body & soul .
Our program is different in that centres on therapeutic relationship & connection, which exponentially amplifies healing & longevity of results. Your ketamine-assisted psychotherapist will remain with you throughout your experience and you will have access to a team of supports who will help you prepare and integrate your experiences, leading to deep and profound healing.
If you have completed Ketamine Therapy at a different clinic and are need of assistance unpacking your experience, please reach out to us today!
